Based on the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron, Slow Horses is a spy thriller television series. On April 1, 2022, the series debuted on Apple TV+. This is the episode where chaos reigns. Like any good racy paperback novel, the previous episode established the scene by outlining the plan and introducing the participants, both known and unknown. The next chapter, however, is where the story picks up speed and fury.
Slow Horses (Season 1) Episode 4 Recap:
Following the previous episode’s events, Min leaves the house and throws up right away. Except for Jackson Lamb(Gary Oldman), the rest of the team is likewise in a state of shock. However, Lamb asks for their phones right away and throws them down the grate into the sewer, in contrast to earlier instances where he would lord over his subordinates’ incapacity to gather themselves. It’s easy to understand why: time is of the essence and perception counts. As Lamb assumes, “the dogs” would now be pursuing them, thus they had to get all of Slough House’s members together.
To the dismay of the other crew members, Lamb instructs his minions to find the other members of Slough House, even reciting their addresses from memory. This is despite the shock of discovering the decapitated head of the kidnapper, whom Cartwright was positive he had seen somewhere. As Lamb departs by himself, successfully purchasing a cap to conceal his appearance from the cameras, River, Min, and Louisa conclude their journey to retrieve Ho and Loy. However, Min and Louisa make a firm decision not to pursue Ho, leaving River to take on the burden of bringing him in. They leave from the neighborhood, narrowly avoiding the MI5 agents Diana was working with.
Albion’s Sons Are Confused
Given that the sons of Albion are perplexed, the heading makes sense. Currently, the vehicle is being driven by the third member, who is accountable for the decapitation, but at least two of them are. Curly, the ax-swinger, says he killed Moe, the apparent leader because he was a spook during a heated debate in the getaway van when the other members are fleeing in fear. Even though he lacked hard evidence, he disclosed that he had spoken with Simmonds before the deed, who had both forewarned him and firmly informed him they were on their own.
They are now stuck in the middle of London at night, heading towards a possible getaway car, and they have no idea what to do with the child, Hassan Ahmed, who is stuck in the back of the van. Their fear isn’t helping the situation; the whole operation is getting out of hand. It is confusing to them how or why someone set them up through Moe.

Mi5 Tries to Catch the Sluggish Horses
Diana Taverner is starting to feel the consequences of the disastrous procedure slip from her grasp. She sends MI5 agents to apprehend Loy, whom she uses blackmail to get him to admit that Jackson Lamb killed Moe. Here, it is revealed that Alan Black, an MI5 agent Diana put among the Albion brothers to handle the operation, is the one who is actually in charge. After Black’s death, Diana resolves to use her resources to seize the last few sluggish horses to quickly assume control of the situation.
It only takes River a few moments to arrive at Ho’s place before the MI5 agent recognizes his flat. River gives Ho the order to look up information about Alan Black, who Louisa and Min identify as having left Slough House long before River joined and who was kicked out of Regent’s Park years earlier for having slept with the Venezuelan ambassador’s wife, inside the speeding car, where Ho cries that he is driving like a crazy. Ho now takes a diversion and visits the hospital where Sid Baker is being held while traveling in the direction of Blake’s Grave, the meeting place where the Slow Horses are meant to reassemble. Although Ho is reluctant to go through with this plan, he does agree to keep the engine running while Cartwright heads to Baker’s room.
But the camera captures him, and that instantly draws the attention of MI5, who dispatch one of their agents to that spot. In Baker’s room, Cartwright notices her injured face and is brought back to the day he had followed Diana Taverner by herself—a tale he was telling Sid before the incidents that led to her hospitalization. Before the audience can realize how that incident is related to River’s acquaintance with Alan Black, the agent catches up with River. Just as he is about to make it out of dodge, he discovers that Ho has abandoned him and that he must race on foot to the meeting spot.
Summary
The episode’s general plot remains undeveloped, but the cat-and-mouse game between the various factions—in which they all attempt to outsmart each other and stay ahead of the game as time runs out—gives the episode’s tone and energy a welcome boost.
